Why CBT?
The Pay-Off
-
Traditional Way
…Or… A Better Way
IN THE RECENT PAST, WE’VE WITNESSED
numerous techn
ological advances, such as the evolution of world-class manufacturing,
ISO quality standards, and just-in-time inventory controls. Governmental
agencies, such as OSHA, are requiring more intensive training and proof
of mastery to protect the products, the people who make them, and the users
of the products.
|
These advances require increased
technical knowledge, with training that often bears a rather high price
tag.
THE HIGH PRICE OF WORKPLACE TECHNOLOGY
Traditionally, instructors have
used dry lectures or tired videos to deliver training in classrooms. It
has been proven, however, that employees learn as little as 10 to 20 percent
with this approach. Employees also avoid the embarrassment of asking questions
because the instruction is designed for the infamous middle-of-the-road
learner. The end-result is that companies are spending considerable training
dollars on non-effective training.
We also know that results of training
must be recorded and available for tracking. Training must be easily accessible,
time efficient and should require minimal instructor involvement. Training
must be provided at remote sites to avoid high travel costs.
Training departments require a more
efficient way of delivering high quality, verifiable learning experiences
that they desperately need. It is no surprise that companies are looking
at the cost and effectiveness of required training and asking for help.
Interactive learning systems have
been available for over 20 years, with hundreds of programs produced to
date. Leading corporate, institutional, and governmental users report the
following benefits through their use of these technologies.
REDUCED COST Computer Interactive
Learning
Proven by more than 30 studies,
interactive training reduces learning time by 50 percent or higher. This
time reduction can be attributed to a variety of factors:
-
Self-paced instruction encourages students
to take the most efficient path to personal content mastery skipping the
areas of strength while investing time in areas of weakness.
-
The combination of visual presentation
with audio explanation delivers information in an easily understood format
while addressing the needs of the learner.
- Immediate interaction and feedback provides
constant, highly effective reinforcement of concepts and content. As the
user trains, the program constantly measures learning through quizzes.
When it discovers a weak area, it continually reteaches until user reaches
100% mastery.
-
Instruction can be customized to the
individual's requirements based upon their responses to the instructional
material.
REDUCED LEARNING TIME
Here are just a few reasons why
interactive training systems provide measurable financial benefits:
-
Well-designed interactive courses actually
reduce the learning time required while increasing learner retention.
Time can be cut be one-half or more. And, as we all know, time is
money.
-
The primary costs of interactive instruction
are in program design and production, not replication, distribution and
delivery. Thus, the cost per student is reduced as more students
use the same program. With traditional instructional methods, the
costs of instruction lie primarily in the delivery (i.e., teacher salaries,
overhead, etc.). These costs remain constant or even increase as more students
place greater demands on fixed resources.
-
Workers do not have to come in before
or after their shifts to receive training. By training during the shift,
as each individual's work schedule permits, overtime costs due to training
are eliminated.
-
Workers can take advantage of downtime
to perform training during their shift. No need to shut
down an area to hold a class.
-
Since workers learn more, they are safer,
work safer, and create culture of safety in the work environment for all
employees.
-
Workers that have been through interactive
training typically perceive a higher commitment from management about the
importance of safety. They also say they prefer it to all other training
methods.
-
Some even comment on how excited they
are about how much they learned, and they enjoyed learning. They
even ask if more subjects could be made available in this medium.

INSTRUCTIONAL CONSISTENCY
- Computer-based instruction is delivered in a consistently reliable fashion
that does not vary in quality from class to class or topic to topic.
INCREASED RETENTION - The
process of interaction with the material provides a strong learning reinforcement
that significantly increases content retention.
INCREASED MOTIVATION - Interactive
systems provide a level of responsive feedback and individual involvement
that has proven to be highly motivating.
The one-on-one nature of interactive
systems empowers employees to take greater control and hence responsibility
for their own learning process.
INCREASING DEMAND AND DECREASING
RESOURCES - These days, there is usually fewer training department
personnel to train an ever-larger number of employees. In order to remain
in compliance with increasing training requirements, such as OSHA, traditional
training methods necessitate increasing fixed costs (instructors, facilities,
materials, etc.).
AUTOMATIC STUDENT DATA AND REPORTING
- Computer-based instruction systems automate the tracking of student records,
reporting of information, and the scheduling and assignment of curriculum.
This eliminates the tedious process often used to enter this information
into a computer program. Plus, much more data is available for analysis.
PROOF OF TRAINING - OSHA now
requires proof of learning not just proof of attendance. Interactive multimedia
uses a computer to deliver and administer the training and keep track of
each learner’s mastery of material. Also, by having evidence that learning
occurred, companies are in a stronger position, in the event of a lawsuit.
NETWORKABLE - Courses can
be delivered over a network to multiple stations and administered from
one station. Courses are even deliverable over your Intranet and
allow you to administer learners over your network.
OBSOLESCENCE PROTECTION -
Mastery courses provide obsolescence protection from changes in computer
and multimedia technology. This is a feature that gives you an option
to upgrade to newer technology courses when they become available without
the cost of complete replacement.
